In our summer holidays we made an early morning turtle excursion up the Dalyan river to a rock nearby Köyceğiz Gölü. The Nile turtle is a large soft-shell turtle which measures over 1.2 metres. The turtle, which does not have any teeth, is mainly carnivorous and feeds on fish, worms and crabs in the water. It occurs in fresh water. Though shy, it can frequently be seen in Dalyan's waterways. On excursions it is lured with chicken meat. We were sorry to hear afterwards that this is actually harmful to the turtle's health. It may cause liver problems. We hope that the use of chicken as turtle fodder will therefore be banned.
